Northwestern Minnesota is the state's Lake district. It is home to thousands of Lakes and is a popular place for cabins and vacation properties. The region includes the headwaters of the Mississippi River as well as the fertile Red River Valley. Major communities include Saint Cloud, Brainerd and Moorhead. Northeastern Minnesota is a wildereness area with spectacular scenery. The North Shore of Lake Superior is a 150-mile-long region that extends from Duluth to the Canadian border. The communities of Grand Marais and Ely provide access to the 3.9 million acre Superior National Forest and famed Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Southern Minnesota is a land of farms, rivers and mid-sized metropolitan areas. The Minnesota River travels more than 200 miles through the region until it joins the Mississippi Riverthat flows another 100 miles to the Iowa Border. This riverfront corridor features spring-fed streams and historic small towns. Larger communities include Rochester, famous for the Mayo Clinic and Austin with the less famous Spam Museum.
